Overview of Sri Lanka's East Coast

As we all know, Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean. You can meet the sea all over the island, no more than 300 kilometers from anywhere in the country. Being an island nation has created so many beautiful beaches around this lovely paradise. Most of those famous beaches can be found on the western, southern, and eastern sides of the island.

Typical Sri Lanka tour itineraries, and most of our tour itineraries only cover beaches in the southern and western parts of the country, so this East Coast itinerary is special because it covers east coast beaches simultaneously with other lovely beaches. Therefore, if you are a beach lover who loves to spend most of your vacation on beaches, this is an ideal option for sure.

Sri Lanka East Coast Map

Here is the east-coast map of the Sri Lanka and its major beaches.

East Coast Season in Sri Lanka

Typically, Sri Lanka has two tourism seasons: the season and the off-season. The time period between October and March is considered the tourism season. Meanwhile, the April to September time period is considered the off-season. A lot of tourists come to Sri Lanka during the season. But there is a smaller crowd in the off-season.

Sri Lanka has two types of weather patterns and rainfall seasons. The North-East monsoon is active from November to February and brings heavy rainfall to the areas of the Northern, Eastern, and Uva provinces. The South-West Monsoon is active from May to September and produces heavy rainfall in the Southern, Western, and Central provinces.

Considering the two rainfall patterns and tourism seasons, most of the southern beaches are perfect places during the tourism season. Waves are tiny and ideal for many water sports. There is less rainfall in that time frame, and the sun is active for many hours.

But during the off-season, the east coast beaches are perfect spots for beach lovers in Sri Lanka. In those times, you can experience less rainfall in hot and humid conditions. Waves are ideal for anyone. So, the East Coast season continues in Sri Lanka from April to September.
